How the lessons work

Learn by pressing the real keys

Each lesson is a short series of steps. A step tells you what to do, such as creating a window or splitting a pane, and waits for you to press the right keys. Use your real keyboard, or tap the on-screen keys on a phone or tablet. A hint is there if you get stuck.

The lessons build on each other: tmux basics first, then panes, sessions, copy mode, and faster navigation. Each one takes five to ten minutes.

What each lesson covers

  • tmux Basics: the prefix key, creating a window with c, and moving between windows with n and the window number.
  • Working with Panes: splitting side by side with % and stacked with ", moving between panes with o, zooming with z, and closing a pane with x.
  • Session Management: detaching with d, the session picker on s, and renaming a session with $.
  • Copy Mode: entering copy mode, searching with vi keys, leaving with q, and pasting a buffer with Ctrl+b ].
  • Advanced Navigation: the window tree on w, the last window with l, the last pane with ;, swapping panes with {, and moving a pane into its own window with !.

What these lessons are not

This is guided practice for the default key bindings, not a live terminal. No commands run here. Once a lesson feels easy, open a terminal and repeat it in real tmux; the getting started guide shows you how.
