How to use the playground

What you can practice

The playground is a safe place to build muscle memory for tmux's default keys. Press Ctrl+b, let go, then press a command key, exactly as you would in real tmux. You can also click the quick command buttons.

  • c creates a new window, and n and p move to the next and previous window.
  • % splits the pane into left and right halves, and " splits it into top and bottom.
  • o moves to the next pane, and z zooms the current pane to fill the window.
  • x closes the current pane, and w lists the windows.
  • d shows what detaching looks like.

A five-minute practice routine

  1. Press Ctrl+b c twice to make three windows, then cycle through them with Ctrl+b n and Ctrl+b p.
  2. In one window, press Ctrl+b % and then Ctrl+b " to make three panes.
  3. Visit each pane with Ctrl+b o, and zoom one with Ctrl+b z. Press it again to unzoom.
  4. Close panes with Ctrl+b x until one is left.
  5. Press Reset and do it all again without looking at the buttons. When you can, you are ready for real tmux.

How it differs from real tmux

This is a simulation drawn in your browser. It does not run a shell, so commands you type are not executed, and layouts are simplified. It is meant for learning where the keys are, not for real work.

When the keys feel natural, try them in a real terminal. The getting started guide walks you through your first real session in about fifteen minutes.
