How the config validator works
What it checks
Paste your .tmux.conf and the validator reads it line by line, looking for the mistakes that most often stop a config from loading or make it behave oddly. Results are sorted into errors, warnings, and tips, each with the line number it refers to.
- Unknown commands, which are usually typos such as setg instead of set.
- Deprecated options that newer tmux no longer accepts, such as utf8 and status-utf8.
- Option names tmux doesn't recognize.
- Unbalanced single or double quotes.
- Key names that may need special syntax, such as C- for Ctrl and M- for Alt.
- Settings worth a second look, such as a high escape-time that makes Vim feel slow, or a small history-limit.
Step by step
- Copy the contents of your config, usually ~/.tmux.conf or ~/.config/tmux/tmux.conf.
- Paste it into the box, or load the example to see what the results look like.
- Fix errors first, because they can stop the rest of the file from loading. Then review the warnings and tips.
- Reload the config in tmux and check that it behaves the way you expect.
What it can't check
These are static checks. The validator does not run tmux, so it can't know which tmux version you use or what your plugins add. Commands and options that come from plugins may be flagged even when they are fine.
For the final word, ask tmux itself: tmux source-file -n ~/.tmux.conf parses the file with your real tmux and reports errors without applying anything.
Privacy
Your config never leaves your browser. The checks run on this page, and nothing you paste is sent to a server.
